The IEEE Greece Section organizes and hosts a session within the IEEE R8 Virtual Student and Young Professional Congress on September 16th at 16:00 CEST. The lecture will be on the topic of ‘Integrated Lab-on-Chip biomedical diagnostic chips: the SARS-CoV-2 example and beyond’ and will be given by Dr Despina Moschou.
Abstract: Lab-on-Chip technology aspires to shrink biomedical laboratories in few cm microchips, in a technological revolution step analogous to the introduction of computer technology in the 20th century. In this presentation Dr Moschou will provide an overview of this technology and its impact on healthcare, discussing its potential role in managing the COVID-19 outbreak and clinical case beyond that. She will also focus on manufacturing techniques for integrated Lab-on-Chip biomedical diagnostic chips and in particular the Lab-on-PCB technology that has been the forefront of her work for the past 8 years, providing examples of collaborative projects under way in various countries and settings.
Presenter: Dr. Despina Moschou (MEng: ECE NTUA, PhD: NCSR Demokritos, IEEE: Senior Member) is currently a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellow and Assistant Professor in BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems (BioMEMs), within the Centre for Biosensors, Bioelectronics and Biodevices (C3Bio), Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath . Since 2010, her main research focus has been to apply her microfabrication and microelectronic device expertise in the development of disposable Lab-On-a-Chip systems for bioanalytical applications (molecular and immunoassay-based Point-of-Care diagnostic devices). For the past 8 years she has been pioneering globally the Lab-on-Printed Circuit Board approach, in an effort to realize disposable, mass-manufacturable Lab-on-Chip microsystems, engaging with stakeholders across all related disciplines (clinical scientists, microbiologists, chemists, manufacturers, engineers, diagnostic industries).
The IEEE R8 Virtual Student and Young Professional Congress takes place online, 14 – 26 September, 18:00 – 21:00.
