Event description

EMB IEEE Student Chapter AUTH invtes you on Wednesday 25/4 at 12:00 in the General Assembly Hall of the Polytechnic Institute (Building D, across the elevators) in a talk of Dr. Psomopoulos regarding a very interesting sector of the bioengineering field. He will focus on the intersection of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis with common data mining approaches. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field that came in the spotligh due to the abundance of genome data being produces by new sequencing techniques. Its goal is to develop and improve on methods for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data in a small cost and with great efficiency. The first part of the talk will entail presentations on basic concepts of molecular biology such as the definitions of genes, DNA, RNA and Gene expression among others. Specifically, the data production mechanisms will be described along with the corresponding computation workflows. Finally, the third part of the talk will focus on the use of established data mining methods (such as clustering and classification) in annotating and interpreting the final output of NGS data pipelines.
